We all know dentists recommend you spend at least two minutes properly brushing your teeth at least twice a day. But if you don’t spend that kind of time on your teeth, this next story may catch your attention. A new product is promising to clean your teeth in just seconds! But as Cindy Csordas reports, the speed will put a dent in your wallet.
Brushing your teeth just got high tech.
Dentist Alan Kwong Hing just recently saw the Blizzident product online. It’s a toothbrush tailored for your mouth. You bite down and grind for six seconds and Blizzident says your teeth and tongue will be perfectly clean:
“Oh it’s pretty cool, it’s using some of the latest technologies we are employing in dentistry basically cad-cam. I’d like to try it. I’m just concerned about the hardness of the bristles is there potential for you to damage the gums if you chew too hard because people will always do a little bit more.”
Blizzident says if you use their product for 10 seconds it’s equal to brushing your teeth by hand for 6 minutes!
Claudia Caplan is a patient: “I definitely would try it.”
The product costs $400 and Blizzident recommends you replace it once a year.
Caplan: “I’m still a conventional tooth brusher, I like my toothbrush touching my teeth.”
Blizzident says dentists around the world are able to scan your teeth to create a 3D model of your own mouth. Then Blizzident creates the tailored product it says will clean your teeth in as little as six seconds.
Some patients here at Westdale Dental Centre in Hamilton are not sure the product is for them.
Adrienne Gilgoric is another patient: “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have 6 seconds though to do their teeth. My first concern would be bristles up your gums and for anybody that’s concerned about the receding gums I would be worried about that.”
Alan advises Blizzident users who cut down on brushing time not to cut down on visits to the dentist: “You still have to floss, make sure diet is good, you have to see your dentist on a regular basis.”
We phoned Health Canada to see if the product is approved and it says it’s a product that doesn’t require approval but it is monitored by Health Canada. For more information about the Blizzident go to www.blizzident.com
