HAPPENING NOW:
Seniors: volunteering is good for you
Giving of your time is good for the soul – but volunteering also offers physical health benefits, especially for senior citizens.
A nationwide study by home instead senior care network found almost half of all seniors surveyed performed some form of unpaid community service. Of those volunteers, 86 percent who suffered with chronic health problems found they could better manage their condition when they volunteered.
Work performed included meal preparation, light housework, transportation; but most importantly, companionship.
Many of these senior volunteers are upwards of 70 years old.
In an attempt to recognize their contributions, Home Instead Senior Care has launched a Salute to Senior Service campaign. It’s searching for outstanding volunteers, and will award the title to one person in each province as well as a national winner.
