RIM denies benching Playbook

(Video Added:) Research in Motion is fighting back, after rumours it was halting production of its Playbook surfaced earlier today.

The Waterloo-based company issued a statement saying it usually doesn’t respond to rumours, but any suggestion the Playbook is being discontinued is “pure fiction”.

The company says it is still committed to the tablet market.

RIM shipped about 200,000 Playbooks in its most recent quarter — about half of what analysts had been expecting. It has struggled against the popularity of Apple’s iPad.

Earlier this week several retailers slashed prices on the troubled tablet.

The news also comes just days after unconfirmed reports that billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn bought RIM stock to try to force changes at the BlackBerry maker.
