Radon gas in people’s homes is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths.

An inspection found that Mike and Jana Katz had four times the acceptable levels of radon in their home. The levels were in the danger zone. Today, Canada’s best known home improvement contractor, Mike Holmes came to their rescue.

Along with the Ontario Lung Association, Holmes is raising awareness about the hazards of radon gas which is seeping into almost every home in Canada: “So do you panic? No. For $250 you can have a test in your home to find out whether or not you or your kids are breathing in radon, or possibly more gases. Now if I told you in your home, we off gas on furniture, carpets, hairspray, perfume, even air fresheners. There’s things we need to do about this. There’s a simple unit that can actually exhaust from the earth for about $2,500. First thing you’ve got to do if find out if you have it. Second, you have to do something about it.”

The lung association says radon gas exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
