Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne wants to get kids moving.

The provincial government says it will add 60 minutes of physical activity to Ontario’s curriculum. Wynne hopes the extra time will help combat the climbing obesity rate in the province.

“This isn’t just about competitive athletics; this is about activity. I would like to make it across the curriculum.”

“If you go outside on a hike as part of your science lesson, then that’s activity. So I think there are many many ways teachers and schools can encourage that kind of activity before school, after school, during school, during science class or in other parts of the curriculum.”

“There are ways to be active that aren’t competitive sports.”

Wynne says 9 out of 10 children in Ontario do not get the recommended hour a day of physical activity.
