Pregnancy and diet
A healthy diet during pregnancy may be key to reducing the risk of serious birth defects.
A study looked at the overall diets of over 10,000 women, both before and during pregnancy.
Those who ate the healthiest were the least likely to give birth to a child with spinal cord, brain malformations or a cleft lip.
It’s the first time the overall quality of a pregnancy diet was linked to reducing the risk of birth defects, not just the effects of a single nutrient like folic acid.
