Preemies and asthma

Infants born premature may have a higher risk for asthma later in life.

Scientists in the Netherlands poured over numerous studies involving more than one million children. They found a consistent trend; babies born before 37-weeks gestation had nearly double the risk for asthma and wheezing disorders during childhood. Those born before 32-weeks almost tripled their chances. Experts say this shows breathing problems associated with pre-term births can persist throughout a child’s life.
