Organ transplants and cancer
Organ transplant patients may have an increased risk for several types of cancer.
A new study of over 175,000 transplant patients found their overall cancer risk was double that of the general population.
The most common cancers among transplant patients are non-hodgkin lymphoma, lung, liver and kidney cancer.
Researchers say some cancers develop because transplant recipients aren’t able to fight off viruses that form tumours, but more studies are needed to determine other causes.
