Niagara Region to launch consolidated transit system by 2023

The Niagara Region can now transition to a single transit system after it received the required triple-majority support Wednesday.
All 12 of the municipalities in the region voted on a motion to create a consolidated transit commission.
The mayor of St. Catharines said their goal is to begin operations by January 2023.
“It’s all coming together and 2022 is going to be about getting the consolidated transit commission up and running,” Mayor Walter Sendzik said in an interview on Morning Live Thursday.
“Getting the board members, hiring a general manager and making sure that the agreements between the three existing transit commissions are brought together.”
The Niagara Region says a Transit Commission Steering Committee has been established to lead the transition.
Once a commission board is in place, a general manager will be hired and a public advisory committee will be formed.
Existing transit systems will stay in place as the transition occurs throughout 2022.
