The new managing director of the International Monetary Fund gave her first major address in Washington Thursday.

Christine Lagarde took over as head of IMF when Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned after facing sexual assault charges in New York.

Those charges were dismissed last month.

During Lagarde’s speech Thursday, she described how advanced economies are crushed by debt.

She says nations need to work together to clear balance sheets.

Lagarde is the first woman to run the global financial institution.
