Hamilton Health Sciences opened their new state-of-the-art centre, aimed at speeding up breast cancer diagnosis.

The new CIBC breast assessment centre is located at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. Officials say the 11,000 square foot facility will reduce the need for multiple appointments and minimize the time spent waiting for test results.

Juravinski Hospital president Dr Ralph Meyer explains the centre is equipped with the latest technology, including a molecular breast imaging unit and 2 ultrasound units.

“What this building brings together is the ultrasound, the nuclear medicine, and the pathology in order to do the biopsies all under one roof, so that women that have a positive mammogram, that is it requires more work to determine whether the cancer exists or not.”

“Or, women who have a symptom, they have discomfort in their breast, maybe bleeding, a lump may be felt. These woman can come to a single location and undergo a detailed assessment and the necessary tests.”

The hospital expects to see 14,000 patients a year.
