Maple leaf foods’ second-quarter earnings were nearly *five times* stronger than last year.

The food processor cut expenses and boosted prices to deal with rising costs of flour and sugar.

Net earnings rose to $24.6 million up from $4.9 million a year ago.

But Maple Leaf is having trouble with the high Canadian dollar, which makes its exports more expensive.
