It wasn’t the burger, it was the jam. Toronto Public Health announced that it was “maple bacon jam” that topped the now infamous “cronut burger” that caused over 200 people to be sick after eating at the CNE. And Tuesday Epic Burger and Waffles, the company that makes the cronut, was able to re-open. Sean Leathong has the story.
The Epic Burgers are back in business. And hungry customers are taking a big bite.
“So how are you feeling? I feel fantastic. In an hour, I’m not sure, but right now, feels pretty good.”
And they’re showing no fear.
“Now I need to go work this off.”
The cronut burger is now off the menu. They had to wait a while for the food to arrive, but once it did, Dave Bednar, General Manager of The Ex, wanted to make sure he was the first in line.
“Can I have a smash burger and could you put a coke with that?”
And show the public there’s nothing to fear.
“We really do need to get behind this operator and let him conduct his business.”
223 customers complained of illness that was found to be related to the cronut burger. Epic Burger closed last week after the first cases were reported and an investigation by Toronto Public Health began. That investigation revealed that maple bacon jam, part of the cronut not made by Epic Burger was the cause.
Christian Reilly of Epic Burger said “We feel vindicated in a sense.”
The facility has been cleaned to Toronto Public Health standards, and staff has been retrained, but Epic Burger isn’t taking chances.
“We’re reverting back to the reputable suppliers.”
The supplier of maple bacon jam is a bakery in Toronto called Le Dolce. They have closed their doors to co-operate with the investigation by Toronto Public Health which hasn’t pointed the finger just yet.
Dr. Lisa Berger from Toronto Public Health said “There were some temperature control issues both at the supplier and on site.”
Proper refrigeration is what stops the bacteria from spreading. They say that all parties involved are fully cooperating with the investigation and that they are confident that everything at Epic Burger is perfectly safe.
