Mac research: elderly can be given same vaccines

Researchers at McMaster University have made a discovery that could change the way senior citizens are vaccinated.

Typically doctors will give elderly patients a form of vaccination that was concocted in a laboratory instead of a live vaccine, which is a diluted form of the virus or bacteria you are trying to prevent. They worry about using the virus, because seniors are more prone to infection.

What these researchers discovered – by accident – is that there is every reason to use live vaccines: elderly immune systems are not deficient in the way scientists had thought. Lisa Hepfner explains.
