Preventing people from starting is one thing, but helping them stop once they’re addicted is an even bigger challenge.

It’s hard to find a smoker who hasn’t made at least one attempt to quit. Most people try nine times before they’re successful. You’re more than twice as likely to succeed if you use stop smoking aids, and thankfully some new discoveries have made those even more effective.

Nicotine patches are available at most drug stores without a prescription.

You can get other quit smoking medications through your doctor.

There are programs in the Niagara to Hamilton area that can help by offering help through a trained quit-smoking therapist or who could provide free nicotine replacement products like nicotine patches, lozenges or inhalers.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Smoker’s Helpline can be reached toll free at 1-877-513-5333  and at smokershelpline.ca

In Hamilton you can reach the Hamilton Public Health Tobacco Hotline at 905-540-5566 xt. 1 to find out about the “Stop on the Road Program”

The next workshop is on November 11th.
