Kids and adults in Hamilton got a lesson on helmet safety today.
The Hamilton helmet initiative teamed up with McMaster Children’s Hospital to give people in Hamilton a chance to learn how to properly wear a helmet. There were experts on site to answer questions and to help increase awareness about the importance of wearing a helmet.
Zsuzsi Trim is a public health nurse: “People will say I never fall on my bike so I don’t need to wear a helmet. And I would say, when you get in a car, do you not buckle your seat belt because you’re not always getting in a car accident? It’s preventable. The brain is precious. It’s fragile. It’s everythng that you are and helmets are the best way to protect it.”
Helmets are recommended not only for biking but for other activities including skateboarding, skating, horseback riding and when using a scooter.
