Beating the heat at the beach

Summer officially started around two months ago. But it feels like we’ve waited until today for typical Southern Ontario summer weather. And all of this heat has arrived just one week before school starts again. But there are still several days left to enjoy what’s left of the traditional summer vacation time as we hear first hand from reporter Phil Perkins.
A funny thing happened to me when I rolled up to Van Wagner’s beach earlier today. I had trouble finding a parking spot! Just one of many signs people were taking advantage of this potentially final shot of summer heat.
This is what we’ve been deprived of all summer. A day at the pool alongside other waders and sun bathers.
“Really hot and it’s so great to finally go have a swim.”
Hoping on two or eight wheels down the boardwalk. Or that beach day we’ve been waiting for.
Sergio: “It’s felt like autumn all summer so we’re just trying to enjoy the sun out here.”
Last year, we had seven days of 30 degree plus temperatures. Today was this year’s first one but it felt like forty with the humidity. It also led Environment Canada to issue it’s first heat warning of the summer. This is just for one-day, so no one was complaining.
“Down to the beach, having a great time with the kids.”
“I got an ice cream and it’s lovely.”
Ah yes, ice cream. Nothing cools the body in a more delicious way. Even better when paired with fish and chips.
Shelly Anderson is with Hutch’s: “We’re probably going to serve five or six hundred fish and chips for sure.”
“I called in, took a day vacation, decided to come out and enjoy it down by the beach, have a fry.”
But not everyone can just call into work. Some, like this lifeguard, have to beat the heat while working outside.
“We do fifteen to thirty minute rotations so we get a chance to be off where it’s air conditioned.”
When it comes to being active in the heat, it doesn’t get more intense than rugby practice with zero cover from the sun.
“No cloud cover, it’s going to be gruelling.”
Dan Pletch is Head Coach of McMaster Men’s Rugby: “The higher intensity stuff is during the cooler part of the day and the hot part of the day is a little less physically intense.”
Kelly Bishop, Athletic Therapist: “Make sure they drink enough at least, a litre of water before and make sure they eat before as well.”
