Hamilton is above the provincial average for pregnant mothers who smoke.

On average, nearly 17 per cent of pregnant women smoke in the city. That’s above the provincial average of about 12 per cent.

But some parts of the city have even higher rates. The lower city has a rate of 35.5 per cent, or about one-third of expectant mothers who smoke.

The next highest area for moms who smoke is north of Main and east of the industrial area. It’s at 29.5 per cent.

The areas with the lowest smoking rates are Waterdown, Westdale and Ancaster.

The Healthy Birth Weights Coalition says mothers who smoke during pregnancy are twice as likely to have a baby with a low birth weight compared to non-smoking moms.
