Halton police launch anti-hate campaign with local schools

Halton police have partnered with local school boards in the region to launch an anti-hate awareness campaign.

Constable Ron Ferlin from the Halton Regional Police Service’s Community Mobilization Bureau spoke with Morning Live’s Bob Cowan on Wednesday to explain the #NOHATEINHALTON campaign.

“[It] supports our already ongoing commitment to reducing all forms of hate and educating school-age youth, as well as the community as a whole,” said Ferlin.

The campaign will be running in roughly 180 schools in Halton Region and aims to eliminate all forms of hate.

Halton police say they will be encouraging staff and students to have conversations about speaking up if they witness or hear of someone being a victim to a hate-motivated crime.

“We are also looking to reduce any stigma and remove any barriers people may have to reporting these incidents or any types of crimes at all,” said Ferlin. “Our ultimate goal is to build a sense of community within the schools and have students and faculty work together to remove all forms of hate.”

In partnership with Crime Stoppers of Halton, Halton police are providing stickers with QR codes that will be posted at many of the schools in the region. Students and faculty can use the stickers to scan or call to report a hate-related crime anonymously.

The campaign is running from Nov. 8 to Nov. 12. which coincides with Crime Prevention Week in Ontario running Nov. 7 to Nov. 13.
