Some sobering findings surrounding drug abuse and healthcare professionals.
Mayo Clinic researchers examined the records of more than 44-thousand medical residents, who specialized in anesthesiology. The subjects dated back to the mid 70’s. Overall, substance abuse among this specialized population was low, about 1%. But the rate increased slightly over the study period, with a high risk of relapse. It was also discovered about 11% of suspected abusers died of a cause directly related to their addiction.
