Making your own beer used to be about saving money, now it’s more of an art. But that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. The folks at Nickel Brook brewery in Burlington showed us the basics. “When you’re making beer at home, you know there’s no preservatives in it, you know the ingredients you’re using to put in too so it becomes a more natural product that you’re going to be consuming.” John Romano, owner of Nickel Brook Brewery
For first timers, Romano suggests starting with premixed malt extract kind of like concentrated beer syrup. You mix the malt with water, add yeast, wait a few weeks and bingo, you’ve got beer.
The equipment to make beer from a beer kit could cost you about $70- $80. When you’re making beer from barley, you could spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You can try grains and flavours but before getting too creative, Romano recommends using a foolproof kit.
