Our very own Elise Copps is strapping on her dancing shoes to compete in Halton’s Dancing with Easter Seals Stars next month. The event pairs “celebrity dancers” with professionals to compete for the title of best dancer and fundraise for Easter Seals.

Elise and her partner, Jimmy LaFontaine, from Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Hamilton, are working on a tango and a special surprise dance that’s never before been performed at the event. They’ll go head to head with eight other couples, dancing for a packed room of supporters and a discerning panel of judges.

Because the event is both a competition and fundraiser, donations made online translate to votes for your favourite dancer. Funds from donations and ticket sales to the dinner-dance event go to Easter Seals which provides assistance to kids with physical disabilities.

One of those services is Woodeden Easter Seals camp, a fully accessible summer camp just for kids with special needs. 15-year old Sydney Weaver has gone to Woodeden for the past four years and says it gives her a chance to be just like everybody else, “A couple times a day, depending on where you are, you might get asked what your disability is. And when you go to camp, that kind of goes away. Your disability kind of fades.” She has cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair and has impaired fine motor function. But at camp, she can do archery, pottery, even high ropes thanks to special adaptations.

She attended Dancing with Easter Seals Stars last year and is looking forward to another night of fun on October 2nd. If you’d like to join her at the event or vote for your favourite dancer, you can find more information here http://www.easterseals.org/halton-dancing-with-easter-seals-stars/.
