With temperatures sinking, many of us will be reaching for the thermostat and turning on the furnace for the first time.

But have you checked yours lately? And what else should you take a close look at, to make sure your home stays warm and dry this winter? Adam Atkinson has a checklist.

Here is a checklist of how to winterize your home.

  • Roof: Make sure shingles are in good shape
  • Drainage: Clean eavestrough, ensure water drains away from house
  • Furnace: Have a professional check your furnace and fireplace
  • Windows/Doors: eliminate drafts
  • Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector
  • Change your furnace filter every 6 to 8 weeks
