Closures for Arcelor Belgium

Arcelormittal, the parent company of Hamiton’s Dofasco, announced Thursday it will close two blast furnaces in Belgium.

Just last week, workers at a steel plant in Belgium held six executives locked in their office for more than 30 hours.

Production at the plants stopped in 2008 and in the summer of 2011.

Union leaders say 1,000 jobs will be lost as a result.

Arcelormittal is based in Luxembourg and operates the former Dofasco here in Hamilton.
