An Indigenous chef is using her artisan chocolate business to bring awareness to residential schools, missing and murdered Indigenous women and the Sixties Scoop.

Tammy Maki, owner of Raven Rising and Sixties Scoop survivor, honours family members, friends and anyone affected by donating a portion of the proceeds to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

“Every month or two, the link on the website is changed so that people who are interested can click it and learn about all the different societies and issues that Indigenous people face,” Maki said.

She also creates chocolates using traditional ingredients sourced from Indigenous people and businesses in Canada and around the world. Maki strives to offer sustainable, ethically sourced, traceable, fair-trade and organic ingredients.

The e-commerce chocolate shop based in Sudbury was launched in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Maki said she plans to open a storefront in a few months.

“I’m surprised the growth has been phenomenal,” she said.
