Calcium build-up
A CT scan that looks for signs of harmful calcium build-up could be the best way to predict heart attacks among adults with normal cholesterol levels.
At present, the standard way to determine the risk is to measure levels of a protein in the blood called CRP.
Researchers studied $2,000 people that underwent both the coronary calcium scan and the usual CRP test.
They found 13% of those with the highest calcium scores had a heart attack or stroke, compared to 2% of those with the highest CRP scores.
