Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward says she is pleased with the provincial government’s recent announcement about boundary adjustments for the city.

The city of Burlington received the news on Nov.10 saying the Urban Growth Centre (UGC) will move away from the downtown core and closer to the Go Station. Steve Clark, minister of municipal affairs and housing, also confirmed the removal of the Major Transit Station Area (MTSA) designation in the downtown.

“Both of those are being misused to justify egregious overdevelopment,” Ward said in an interview on Morning Live on Wednesday. “We worked with the region, our city council and the province to get those moved to the Burlington GO station where we think growth belongs…It’s a significant victory.”

The removal of the MTSA designation and boundary adjustment of the UGC takes effect immediately and applies to all new applications, according to a statement from the City.

However, the minister decided to exempt seven applications that were submitted prior to Nov. 10 from the UGC boundary adjustment and the City is seeking guidance on how to proceed.

Ward also shared the city of Burlington is looking for community members to volunteer on a committee or board.

These volunteers would provide advice and feedback to city council and staff regarding city issues.

Residents over the age of 18 are encouraged to apply online at burlington.ca/committees until Nov. 26.
