Baby gene mapping

It may soon be possible to learn a baby’s genetic makeup without having to stick a needle into the womb.

Researchers in Washington have successfully mapped the DNA of a fetus using a sample from the mother’s blood, and a saliva specimen from the father.

DNA from the baby is present in the mother’s blood, and researchers say they can use that information to screen for more than three thousand genetic disorders, like down’s syndrome.
