Autism funding concerns

Controversial changes to how the province handles children with autism were being debated at Queen’s Park today. Parents of autistic children watched from the gallery as MPP’s from all sides argued the merits of the Liberals new plan which now limits intensive behavioural intervention therapy to children between two to four.

The Premier refer to a new $333 million committment over the next 5 years to eliminate the waiting list for a special program for autistic children and while the money is welcome, how it’s going to be used has divided the autism community.

There are currently 16,000 Ontario families with autistic children on a waiting list for services. The province committing the money to get rid of the list is great news for some but Adam Atkinson introduces us to two local families, who say it will be devastating for them and thousands of others.
