Meet the newest member of Niagara police’s K9 unit, who still needs a name

The newest member of the Niagara police service on the streets. He still has to finish his training in the K-9 unit and he doesn’t have a name yet.

The 11-month-old English Pointer beat out seven other dogs for the chance to serve with the Niagara police.

He’s going to be the seventh member of the K9 unit for Niagara police but he’ll only focus on search and rescue.

Sgt. Rob Kroon from the Niagara police says, “we’re getting more and more calls for missing people, just in the area so this would be a great resource to find somebody and not have them intimidated by this guy.”

Sgt. Kroon is conducting the training and says the pup has about 12 weeks to go before he graduates to active duty.

This high-energy pup still doesn’t have a name. So Niagara police is putting out a call out to the community for suggestions. So far, people have already answered with more than 15 hundred names.

Once he’s done his training and has a name he’ll typically work 4 about four shifts a week with Sgt. Kroon. The deadline for the naming contest is March 2nd.
