Mediation talks between CUPE, Ontario ends with no deal ahead of strike

Mediation between the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Ontario government has concluded without a deal ahead of a scheduled education workers’ strike Friday.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the government is moving forward with legislation — which is expected to pass today — to prohibit strikes and force a contract.

But CUPE has said its workers, such as administrative staff, custodians and educational assistants will start a strike Friday “until further notice,” even if the legislation passes to make a walkout illegal.
Ontario’s Ministry of Education has told school boards to make “every effort” to keep schools open and otherwise pivot to online learning.
Many school boards across Ontario have said schools will be closed during a strike, while others plan to move to remote learning.
