McMaster University to hold homecoming in hopes of discouraging unsanctioned parties

First Published:

McMaster University is bringing back an official homecoming event this weekend, with the hope of discouraging unsanctioned parties around campus.

The university says they are excited to welcome students and alumni back to campus after seeing the street parties get out of control. The 10 acre field at McMaster will be turned into a homecoming party with a foam party, 13 inflatable bouncy castles and obstacle courses, a football game with the McMaster Marauders taking on the Western Mustangs and a concert from Loud Luxury. The goal is to minimize the risks to both students and neighbours by keeping all the festivities on campus.

The entire day has cost about $500,000 according to the student union president, with revenues expected to come in through various other streams during the day.

McMaster University is working with the City of Hamilton and police to keep partying at a minimum during homecoming this weekend.

Hamilton’s university district safety initiative is in effect right now until Sunday night in the Westdale and Ainslie neighbourhoods. Students can face hefty fines for violating the nuisance party bylaw of up to $10,000 for a first offence for things like public intoxication, disorderly conduct, property damage, blocking traffic, fights or climbing on roofs.

The city has an injunction order to prevent these parties and Hamilton Police say it’s important to note that participating when there’s an injunction could mean criminal charges.

Students can expect to see an increase police presence in the area this weekend ahead of homecoming tomorrow.
