A group of former McMaster University engineering students have been named as national runners-up for the 2023 James Dyson Award.
The competition challenges engineers to create innovative designs to “create products that work better.” It is a case for technically strong designs that can compete in a commercial market.
Amos Yu, Manny Lemos, and Aaron Li were the team of electrical engineers hailing from McMaster that created “Cyclops Ride Assist”, the design that would place them as national runners-up.
Cyclops Ride Assist is an all-in-one system to add car safety features to any bicycle. This includes blind spot detection, crash detection, and video logging features.

The design is intended to keep ”cyclists safe and motorists accountable while on the road.”
The team says they were inspired to create the design after seeing the lack of accommodations to cyclists on many North American roads.
It is the first system to integrate modern car safety features into a single design for use on bicycles.
