(Updated) An autopsy has ruled out a dog attack in the death of a Hamilton man; however police have not said what the cause of death is.

Two men were walking the dog along Burton St in Hamilton around 11 last night when it turned on one of them. While early reports identified the dog as a pit bull, it is actually a 40-to-45 pound Shar-Pei-Fila mix.

Police say a neighbour got a baseball bat to try to fight off the dog.

A witness told CHCH News “we saw the dog just chomping down on the man, using him as a rag toy. The bat didn’t help at all. So we just watched the man get torn apart.”

The dog is currently in the care of animal control. Police are still trying to determine who owns the dog and the circumstances that led to the dog attack.

CHCH’s Lisa Hepfner is following this story and will have more on tonight’s Evening News at 6.
