A Hamilton man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to flee a traffic stop and then crashed his vehicle in the city’s east end.

Police say they tried stopping a blue Hyundai that was driving without any lights near Queenston Road and Reid Street around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

While the driver initially pulled over, he proceeded to drive away from the traffic stop at a “high rate of speed,” Const. Indy Bharaj said.

Bharaj says that the responding officers opted not to engage in a pursuit out of concern for public safety.

According to Bharaj, a call came a short while later for a single-vehicle motor-vehicle collision roughly two kilometres from the original scene, near Riverdale Drive.

When officers arrived, they located a man in his 30s, unconscious and behind the wheel of the exact Hyundai they had just tried to pull over.

The man who crashed the car suffered minor head injuries and was taken to hospital.

An apartment buildings front court suffered damage to its railing and the front lawn has been left with a pair of tire ruts from where a vehicle drove over the grass.

He has since been released under a promise to appear and is facing charges of flight from police and dangerous driving.

The man’s decision to flee remains unknown at this time.
