A Welland man is facing charges after he allegedly choked and beat his dog before assaulting two police officers Monday.

Officers responded to an animal complaint call around 3:15 p.m. near Dennistoun and Hooker streets.

After an investigation, police say a man was holding up his Shihtzu dog by the leash and strangling it. The accused then smashed the dog into the railing of his porch six times and struck the dog with a long dark stick. The man also punched the dog multiple times.

When officers requested the man hand the dog over, he refused causing a struggle between the officer and the suspect. Eventually, the officer was able to take the dog away.
