Man arrested for robbing a purse off a woman, 80, in Grimsby

Niagara police have arrested a man after he stole a purse from an 80-year-old woman in Grimsby.

Officers say they responded to a report that the victim’s purse had been stolen from her arm as she walked in a parking lot shortly before 1 p.m. on Feb. 8.

Investigators say the victim was not injured.

According to the police report, the suspect was believed to have used the stolen credit cards from the victim’s purse to buy lottery tickets and gift cards at several businesses throughout the town.

Police say Mathew Cameron Norton, 37, of Grimsby was located and arrested on Tuesday.

Norton is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Robbery contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Unauthorized use of a credit card contrary to section 342(1)(i) of the Criminal Code (2 Counts)
  • Fail to comply with undertaking contrary to section 145(4) of the Criminal Code

The suspect was held in custody and will appear at a virtual bail hearing at a St. Catharines courthouse on Wednesday.
