Man arrested after assault investigation in St. Catharines

A St. Catharines man was arrested Monday after an assault investigation.

Niagara police say officers were called Monday around 3:30 p.m. to a residence in the Chestnut Ln. and Merritt St. area in St. Catharines after receiving reports of an assault.

When officers arrived, 52-year-old Steven Haughton refused to surrender and exit the residence.

Officers called members of the Emergency Task Unit, Canine Unit, and Crisis Negotiators out of concern for the public.

Haughton exited the residence and was arrested around 6:00 p.m. He was charged with assault.

Haughton was released and is scheduled for court Jan. 27.
