Police have charged a 22-year-old man with first-degree murder after a 16-year-old boy was killed at a family gathering at a home on Hamilton Mountain Sunday night.

In a brief tweet shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers say it happened at a home near Cadham Blvd. between Upper Gage and Broughton avenues.

Hamilton police have confirmed that a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest inside of the home and was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In an announcement on Monday afternoon, Det. Sgt. Sarah Beck said 22-year-old Laureano Bistoyong, a cousin of the victim, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police said Bistoyong, the victim and several other family members were playing a game of basketball outside at a nearby park when the game became aggressive.

The group decided to stop playing and return to the address on Cadham Blvd. It is not until they got back to the home that the stabbing occurred.

Bistoyong reportedly fled from the scene following the attack, and police later found him in a vehicle on East 41st St., just south of Sunning Hill Ave.

A citizen called 911 when they saw the suspect in their vehicle. The vehicle was not stolen.

Residents in the area can continue to expect a police presence. A search warrant will be executed at the residence and the Forensics Unit will be present to process the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Det. Girgenti at 905-546-3874.
