The Westdale Theatre – Friday, August 2nd, 5 – 10 PM. We will be showing Women Make Movies’ “Georgie Girl” (2001), about Georgina Beyer – a former sex worker, transgender, Māori Polynesian woman – earlier made an impassioned and moving speech about being raped at knife-point while working, and being unable to turn to the police for help. Georgina Beyer was the first openly transgender woman elected as mayor of Carterton in 1995, and to Parliament in 1999, in NZ history. She helped pass the decriminalization oif sex work in New Zealand with Labour MP Timothy Barnett in 2003. She passed in March of 2023 from complications related to renal failure. Notably, Barnett is openly gay and, emigrated from Austrailia. hashtag#Solidarity
Next at the Westdale, we will also have four panelists discuss the films and answer related audience questions. We will solicit (pun intended) on-theme art and display them in person and on the screen – including two of the original marquee signs from the Lusty Lady – the world’s first once-worker-owned and operated strip club, in San Francisco.
