Former Ontario finance minister Charles Sousa will go to Ottawa as the voters in Mississauga-Lakeshore elect him as their new member of Parliament.

Sousa of the Liberal party declared victory in Monday’s byelection held in the Greater Toronto Area.

With 51 per cent of the vote, Sousa won the night, beating his nearest rival, Conservative police officer Ron Chhinzer, by 14 points.

Chhinzer took 37 per cent of the vote with 99 polls reporting.

Poll analyst Philippe Fournier of 338Canada says the result doesn’t look great for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

It’s the first contest under the Conservative leadership of Poilievre in an area of the country crucial to his party’s success in future general elections.

Fournier notes though that the byelection had a low voter turnout.
