Last day for Ontario-child care operators to opt in to $10-a-day program

Today is the deadline for child-care operators in Ontario to opt-in to the national $10-a-day program.

The deadline was extended from the original date of Set. 1 to give more time to operators to sign up.

The program will reduce child care fees for parents.

As of Friday, around 85 per cent of operators have opted into the program.

Child-care operators, such as for-profit ones, say they want to sign up as a way to issue rebates to parents, but are hesitant about the implications to their business.

Earlier this month, The Ministry of Education sent a memo to licensed child-care providers saying a “revenue replacement” model would continue for 2023. That means once parents see their fees cut in half at the end of 2022, operators will receive that amount from the government in order to make them whole.

Most other provinces saw well over 90 per cent of eligible providers opt in.
