An organization in Hamilton is celebrating its fourth season as the city’s first LGBTQ+ softball league.
Steel City Inclusive kicked off its season at Eastwood Park on Burlington Street East on Sunday.
The league is made up of 18 teams and 400 players of all varying skill levels.
Ash Moffatt, the organization’s communications director, says their goal is to promote inclusion, good sportsmanship and camaraderie.
“As queer people, sometimes we don’t have the best time in sports. This is just a really great opportunity for people to play, have fun, take part.”
It’s Kelly Adams’s fourth season, but this will be the first one that she’s coached.
She says she works two jobs, and this weekend league helps her escape reality.
“It’s important because there is a lot of queer people in the city and there isn’t anywhere for us to go or do anything, so playing softball for all these people, it’s a community,” she said.
“You meet new people, make new friends, and the team changes every year, so you meet new people every year.”
Registration to play is closed, but if you’re interested in participating socially, there’s still time to sign up.
