The federal government has unveiled a new Canadian passport that includes updated security features and artwork of the country’s diverse people, landscapes and wildlife.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser made the announcement Wednesday morning alongside Social Development Minister Karina Gould at the Ottawa International Airport.
Officials say the redesigned passport is set to be printed this summer and made available to the public in the next year.
Canadians will also be able to apply to renew their passport online on a secure government website beginning this fall.

Features of the new Canadian passport
Many changes have been made to the new Canadian passport since it was last updated in 2013.
The first revision people will notice is the new cover with an outline of a maple leaf. On the inside, there are iconic images reflecting Canada throughout the four seasons that can be seen under ultraviolet light.
“The new Canadian passport is more than a travel document; it is a representation of our national identity and values. It is a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Canada,” Fraser said.
There are a number of new security features, including a polycarbonate data page that is similar to the technology used in Canada’s driver’s licences.
Additionally, passport holders’ personal information will now be laser engraved instead of being printed with ink. Fraser said this makes the data page more durable and resistant to tampering and counterfeiting.
Other features include a kinegram over the main photo that changes colours and appears to move when viewed from different angles, as well as a visible passport chip and antenna to confirm the validity of a passport and keep information secure.
“Depending on when you apply, you may get the new or the old version,” officials said in a statement Wednesday.
“However, both versions are secure and reliable, so you don’t need to renew early to ensure your passport is accepted as a travel document.”
