Hamiltonians discussed solutions to homeless encampments

Hamilton residents had their say at a town hall regarding encampments this evening.
Whether a green card to agree or a red one to oppose, when it came to discussing a way to deal with encampments, the voices of Hamiltonians were heard.
At Hill Park Learning Centre, hundreds came through the doors to take part in the first phase of public feedback regarding city hall’s staff recommendation to sanction homeless encampments with specific protocols for the 165 tents in the city. A report heavily voted against by city councillors last month.
The rejected recommendation called for zoned sites, capped at five tents but at least 50 metres from another encampment, schools, and playgrounds.
Displeasure was expressed at the state of the city, and questions were raised, like if approved, how long will the protocols be in effect, and why certain vacant buildings remain empty.
City officials say an online survey is available about the encampment proposal, and another round of public input will take place next week at city hall.
