North End Hamilton waste facility fire fills air with smoke

First Published:

Some North End Hamilton residents were asked to keep their windows closed on Sunday as a result of a multiple-alarm fire at a waste facility.

Emergency services were first called to an industrial building on Gage Ave. North for a reported fire around 7 a.m.

Responding crews say smoke could be seen from a distance as piles of residential garbage  caught fire in the facility.

The fire spread to a second building, causing large volumes of smoke to fill the air in the surrounding area.

Gage Ave. North remained closed between Gertrude St. and Burlington St. throughout the day Sunday as crews battled the fire while residents in the area were advised to keep their windows closed because of the smoke.

There have been no reported injuries.
