Hamilton teen arrested after crashing car into hydro pole and fence

First Published:

Hamilton residents on the west mountain are calling a neighbour a hero after he stopped a fleeing suspect after they crashed into a hydro pole and a nearby fence.

“I was just getting up in the morning, brushing my teeth and all I heard was a big bang,” the neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said.

“Next thing you know I go outside and I see a car right through the fence.”

Hamilton police say they responded to a single-vehicle crash in the area of Mohawk Road West and West 15th Street around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Police confirmed that the lone occupant of the vehicle tried to escape from the scene but was detained by neighbours until officers arrived.

Local EMS told CHCH news a teen male was taken to a pediatric trauma centre for minor, non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the teen was arrested for possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Mohawk Road West was closed for several hours between Millbank Street and Garth Street as hydro crews worked to restore power, but has since reopened.
