Hamilton residents rental property defiled by tenant

First Published:

A family from Hamilton was met with shock after their tenants, who always paid their rent on time, left a nasty surprise after they moved out.

From the floor to the ceiling, dirt, garbage, and even rats filled every nook and cranny of their Hamilton Mountain home, leaving Marla Bettencourt and her family wondering what they’re going to do next.

“It’s been an all-in-all rough time to deal with this, it’s just not fair,” she said.

Bettencourt says she was set to move into her father’s rental property this week, but when her and her father went into the home they thought was well-cared for, they found it in total disarray.

“It’s awful. It leaves my kids and I homeless until it’s done,” Bettencourt said.

Her father says he’s looking into what his legal rights are and getting experts to assess the damage, but for the time being, it will be a while until his daughter can move in.
