Hamilton police to install licence plate readers in patrol vehicles

Hamilton police are installing automated licence plate readers in patrol vehicles as the force continues to see a large number of drivers without proper registration.
The investment comes following a provincial grant to raise accountability in policing and to boost technologies that will help keep communities safe.
The new devices will be used to investigate traffic and criminal offences by detecting plates that are linked to cases such as a wanted and missing persons, stolen vehicles and unattached plates.
The OPP #ALPR system flagged 32 vehicles in the 22 minutes #MississaugaOPP were conducting another traffic stop. The system identified 1 suspended driver, 4 unlicensed drivers, and 27 expired vehicle registrations.

Hamilton police will start rolling out the technology Monday with full implementation expected by September of this year.
The force says once complete, 78 patrol vehicles will be equipped with the technology across the city.
