Hamilton police arrest 25-year-old man responsible for shooting in July

Hamilton police have arrested a 25-year-old man responsible for a shooting that occurred on Hamilton’s Mountain in July.

On Thursday, July 21, at around 9:25 p.m. police responded to a townhouse complex in the area of Upper Paradise Road and Garth Street for a shooting incident.

Police say they found a 27-year-old man with significant gunshot injuries. The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police say they believed the shooting to be a targeted incident.

Investigation revealed the identity of the shooter to be 25-year-old, Abakar Bechir of Hamilton. Police say they learned Bechir had left the province and a warrant was put out for his arrest.

On Aug. 14, Bechir was arrested by member of the RCMP while exiting a plane at Edmonton Airport. He was transported back to Hamilton and has been charged with attempted murder while using a firearm and two counts of fail to comply release order.

Police say the victim of the shooting still remains in critical condition.

Police are asking anyone with further information to contact police.
